Joseph Estabrook,1669-1733, was the first school teacher in Lexington. Born in Concord, he bought a 200 acre farm in Lexington in 1693. According to Hudson's History of the Town of Lexington, "In 1716 Captain Estabrook was employed as a teacher and continued his school five months, for which 15 pounds were paid him from the town treasury." Hudson's book, available at Lexington's Cary Memorial Library also indicates that Joseph Estabrook was Town Clerk, and was elected Selectman (still an important town executive position) several times and served a term as Representative to the General Court which was the Massachusetts Colony's legislature. As a Captain he also commanded a local military company.
The Estabrook Teaching Staff consists of 23 Classroom Teachers and about 26 specialists such as Art, Music, Reading, Languages, Special Needs, etc. shared in many cases with other Lexington Schools. We also have a number of tutors, classroom and other aides, secretaries, lunchroom staff, custodians and school volunteers who all contribute to the smooth operation of the school. See this alphabetic 2009-2010 Staff List for many of them.
